COSON Scores Big As Members Join The IPI System

The Head Office of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) in Lagos was abuzz with excitement last week as confirmation was received that members of COSON have been listed in the critical Interested Parties Information (IPI) system administered by the Geneva based organization, SUISA. The IPI system can be likened to the Bible of the international copyright structure by which every important copyright owner in music is identified around the world. 

The listing of COSON members in the IPI database and the assignment of special international numbers to each of them has made the tracking of the use of their works and compensation for any such use in any part of the world much easier.

The development was received with great rejoicing by COSON members who have received the news as the listing makes them full participants in the international music industry. The mandate to do whatever is necessary to have hundreds of Nigerian artistes listed in the IPI was given by members of COSON to the Board at the COSON 2012 AGM which held at EKO FM Multipurpose Hall in Lagos.

The IPI System is an international register used by the International Confederation of Authors & Composers (CISAC), the Paris based organization representing collective management organizations in 122 countries. It is also used by Bureau International des SociétésGérant les Droits d'Enregistrem(BIEM) member societies found in 42 countries. The IPI contains all the names of rights holders (natural and legal persons), both of copyright protected works and public domain works, made known to the IPI Centre. The collation and presentation of the information standardized according to the CIS regulations of CISAC and BIEM serves the documentation, distribution and accounting processes of the societies linked to the IPI system.

The purpose of the IPI system is the global unique identification of a natural person or legal entity acting across multiple creation classes, roles and rights. This is related to the data exchange not only within and between the CISAC societies, but also in the world-wide transaction and processing with third parties and user organizations such as radio and TV stations, sound carrier producers, etc.

Speaking on the development, COSON General Manager, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji said, "We said in the beginning that COSON would do everything to ensure that the Nigerian music industry is an important player on the world stage. I am very pleased that COSON has received the first batch of IPI numbers. This is in line with the drive to ensure that members'works exploited anywhere on the face of the earth is tracked and right owners adequately compensated. The world has become a global village with the coming of the digital age. While that may have its own disadvantages, it creates a huge opportunity for the creative industry all around the world and we are excited to be part of this".

Commenting on development, CEO of Now Muzik and member of COSON Board, Mr. Efe Omorogbe said, "Thumbs up to the guys at the COSON office for the good works that they are doing. I am glad at this news. Now it will be a lot easier to monitor the use of Nigerian music anywhere around the world. Our artistes are assured of full compensation for their works as COSON is not resting on its oars to re-write the story of our industry."

Also reacting to the news, female artiste Azeezat expressed joy at the news, saying, "This is a giant leap in progress for Nigerian artistes and the Nigerian economy. Being part of a global database means more returns on investment for the music business in Nigeria. Congratulations to all our members. COSON is working."

Brandi and Eddie's son Mason, was injured in an undisclosed accident, and naturally, Brandi Glanville shared the event on Twitter with cryptic Tweets:

LeAnn, of course, caught wind of her stepson's injuries and took to Twitter:

• "Got a text from a friend at 4:30am asking if mason was ok. THANK GOD!"
• "Mason just called Eddie himself!! It's been a panicked morning not knowing anything and mason being all the way across the US. Relived to know he's ok."
• "My husband need (sic) to be notified. Period."

Rimes was pissed, she explained, that a friend notified Eddie of his son's hospitalization via text message, and she didn't think that was sufficient.

Of course, Eddie and LeAnn have blocked Brandi from calling their phones, so even if Brandi were to have tried, she wouldn't have been able to.

Now that is some highly effective parenting right there, THG readers.

LeAnn loves to rant about Brandi to the point where it becomes highly uncomfortable; eventually, she said she should have "handled" her hysterics better.

That's the understatement of all time, for all three of these loons.

Herdsmen/Farmers conflict: Displaced persons in Benue lament makeshift camps

The refugees live in the open air in Makurdi.

The people in Benue State displaced by attacks on some villages and settlements, allegedly by Fulani herdsmen, are at risk of an epidemic due to unsafe water and congestion at their makeshift lodgings in Makurdi.

Many of the displaced persons currently live in the open air within the state capital. A privileged few have found refuge at public primary schools.

PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday visited some of the camps along Northbank and Highlevel streets and behind Mobile Police Barrack along Naka /Adoka road. Most of the refugees, including children and the aged, were seen drinking unclean water and sleeping in the open air without mosquito nets. They complained of insufficient food and lack of ventilation in the classrooms.

A heavy downpour on Sunday did not help matters as most of the refugees had their mattresses soaked and were forced to sleep out in the sun on Monday.

The make-shift camps have created congestion in Makurdi, particularly along the entrance into the state capital, Highlevel Street, and behind the Modern Market Road.

A medical staff at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, speaking under anonymity as he was not officially cleared to do so by his employers, said the displaced persons risked contracting cholera, typhoid fever, and pneumonia, which could result in an epidemic, if not properly handled.

He advised, "The state government has to act fast. These people need safe drinking water and a clean environment before the situation degenerates health-wise."

A victim of the unrest, Pius Gbende, told PREMIUM TIMES at the Northbank camp that he had lived in the open for five days without bathing because of the unavailability of water.

"We drink any kind of water that is available, not minding the source. Since it is not enough, we only drink to survive," Mr. Gbende said.

Some sachet water sellers have taken advantage of the situation by selling water at N20 Naira per sachet rather than the usual N10.

No police, no soldier

One of the refugees, Elizabeth Tor, a widow with four children, said she was displaced from Guma Local Government Area. According to Mrs. Tor, the 600 mobile police officers recently said to have been deployed to Benue State to control the unrest were yet to do their jobs.

"Their presence is not yet being felt because the Fulanis are still occupying our villages," she lamented.
Another victim, Fidelis Agune, in his late sixties, a husband of two with 14 children, narrated his ordeal.

"Up till now that I speak with you, there are no security operatives in our villages. The armed Fulani men are still ambushing anyone who goes back there to pick food items or property. Some people on Friday, including my eldest son got close to Gbajimba, our council headquarters, but could go no further. One was shot dead, and four others escaped by mere whiskers. No police or soldier was there," he lamented.

The Nigerian military has, however, announced a heavy deployment of soldiers to the state, as well as Plateau ad Nasarawa, on Monday.

Artificial inflation

In Gwer-West local government, the violence has affected economic activities, as residents in the area live in perpetual fear of impending attacks. Local vigilantes formed by youth in the area are being attacked and killed by gunmen, the residents alleged.

The insecurity in Gwer-West has warranted a temporary closure of the access road to the council secretariat, Naka, which is less than 45 minutes from Makurdi. The bad road also contributed to an increase in transport fare in the area.
Commuters passing through Naka now take an alternative route through Gwer-East local government. The route takes most motorists close to two and a half hours to Naka.

The unrest has also caused an increase in food prices and other household commodities.

Sri Lanka breezed into the World Twenty20 semifinals after left-arm spinner Rangana Herath destroyed New Zealand in a 59-run romp in Chittagong on Monday.

Playing his first match in the tournament proper, the 36-year-old bowler claimed five wickets for only three runs in 3.3 overs and was involved in two run outs as well, as New Zealand folded for 60 – their lowest total in 20-over cricket – in 15.3 overs.

For New Zealand, who began their chase one batsman short after all-rounder Corey Anderson had dislocated a finger trying to take a catch, Kane Williamson contributed 42 of the 60 runs while none of his team mates managed double digits in their spectacular collapse.

Sachithra Senanayake also helped himself to a couple of wickets as Sri Lanka's spin duo returned a remarkable combined figure of 6.3-2-6-7 in a bowler-dominated, low-scoring contest.

"I trusted my spinners. Herath bowled really well, he was unbelievable," Sri Lanka's stand-in skipper Lasith Malinga said at the presentation ceremony.

"We were ready for this (effectively) quarterfinal match," said the paceman after Sri Lanka joined South Africa in the last four from Group One.

Once Martin Guptill was run out after a mix-up with Williamson, it was a steady procession of New Zealand batsmen who surrendered to Herath's guile, completely undoing the good work done by their bowling colleagues.

"All credit to Sri Lanka. Herath and Sachi, the way they bowled was outstanding. They blew us away with about eight wickets for some 10 runs," New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum said.

McCullum would not say Anderson's unavailability added more pressure on his side and rather blamed it on the other players.

"I wouldn't say there was extra pressure. It was sort of a quarterfinal anyway. We just didn't adapt quick enough and played some mindless cricket. Once you let them get on top, it's very hard to stop (them).

"We took some poor options today and hence we're on the plane home."

Leading Sri Lanka in the absence of Dinesh Chandimal, who served a one-match ban for his team's second over-rate offence in 12 months, Malinga initially watched in dismay as Trent Boult wrecked his top order with a three-wicket burst.

After Kusal Perera fell to Boult through a dubious caught-behind decision, Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals before eventually being shot out for 119 in 19.2 overs.

Mahela Jayawardene topscored for them with 25, while Lahiru Thirimanne managed 20 but lack of partnerships halted Sri Lanka's progress.

Jimmy Neesham (3-22) polished off the tail to restrict Sri Lanka to a sub-120 total but even that proved beyond New Zealand.

Malinga's leadership experience was more than offset by the presence of four former captains in the Sri Lankan side -Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews, who is the current test and 50-over skipper.

"I'm really lucky to be captain of this side… They have good experience and that's why were successful today," Malinga said.

LASU fees: NANS stages protest at Fashola’s office

"It is not right to keep a university only for the children of the poor. That doesn't make a university anymore."

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Monday staged a protest at Government House, Ikeja, against the hike in fees of the Lagos State University, LASU.

About 200 of them stormed the governor's office chanting songs and carrying placards with various inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read "Education is our Right," "Fashola Reduce LASU fees," and "What have the poor done wrong?''.

Security details manning the governor's office gate had a hard time controlling the students as they attempted to gain access to the Government House.

Governor Babatunde Fashola, however, later ordered that the protesters be allowed to come and express their grievances.

On their entry, Sunday Ashefon, NANS South-West Zone Coordinator, who led the protest, described the increase in LASU fees from N25,000 to N250,000 as prohibitive.

He said the increase had taken its toll on the students of the institution as some of them had dropped out because they could not afford to pay.

Mr. Ashefon described the situation as appalling, saying Nigerian students want a reduction of the "arbitrary fees''.

"The fees are not just affordable; some of our colleagues have opted out of LASU simply because they cannot pay from N250, 000 to N350, 000 school fees.

"These prohibitively high fees are some of the highest paid by any university in the country. Children of the poor can no more attend LASU and this is sad.

"What Nigerian students want therefore, is nothing but reversal of the fees to the initial N25, 000. APC as a political party promises change, we want that change in LASU too,'' he said.

Mr. Ashefon said the students were also worried about the lingering Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and College of Education Academic Staff Union strike.

He appealed for the governor's intervention in ending the crises.

Also speaking, Nurudeen Yusuf, LASU Student Union President, noted that the hike in fees in the institution had resulted in many problems in the school.

He said that the hike had not only forced out some students because they could not pay, it had also resulted in falling standards.

"The glorious days of LASU are disappearing and we can't really see any justification for the new fees,'' he said.

Responding, Mr. Fashola said the decision of the state government to increase fees was to reposition the university and make it a centre of academic excellence.

According to him, the N25, 000 paid before now by students will not guarantee the kind of high quality education they deserve to get.

He said that the fees were part of efforts to create a university where the children of the poor and the rich could learn and achieve together.

"It is not right to keep a university only for the children of the poor. That doesn't make a university anymore.

"Our dream for LASU is a university where children of the rich and the poor can sit together and develop as a generation.

"For me and for those who advised us, it is a time bomb waiting to explode when you separate the children of the rich and the poor.

"So it is better they both journey and achieve together and that is our dream for LASU,'' he said.

Mr. Fashola said the government had consistently increased budgetary allocation to the university, saying revenue from the hiked fees was too infinitesimal to run the institution.

The governor said about N1.2 billion had been set aside by the state government to provide scholarships for those who could not afford the fees.

Mr. Fashola insisted that the fees were increased with good intentions and urged the students and other stakeholders to see reason with government.

Durban laid the ground on Monday for a potential Olympic Games bid by announcing its intention to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Neither of the multi-sport events has ever been held in South Africa but Durban indicated it was looking to break the mould by staging the 22nd Commonwealth Games in eight years' time.

Monday also saw the Canadian city of Edmonton, host to the 1978 Commonwealth Games and the 2001 outdoor athletics world championships, declare its 2022 interest.

Confirmed bids are due to be lodged in March 2015, with formal consideration by members of the Commonwealth Games Federation taking place at their general assembly in Auckland in September 2015.

There have been concerns about the long-term viability of the Commonwealth Games, an event mainly open to countries that were once part of the British Empire, in an era where increasing importance is placed on regional championships, not to mention Olympic and world competitions.

But, ahead of this year's edition in Glasgow, CGF president HRH Tunku Imran of Malaysia welcomed the prospectives bids from Durban and Edmonton by saying: "This is an exciting development for the Games movement, one that reinforces the Games position on the world's sporting stage.

"The future outlook for the Commonwealth Games is extremely positive.

"Last week we saw the final visit of the Federation's Coordination Commission to Glasgow in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and it highlighted the excellent progress being made there."

"Glasgow will be followed by a great Games on the Gold Coast (in Australia) in 2018 and now we have the prospect of these being followed by what I'm sure will be an outstanding Games in either Canada or South Africa in 2022."

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Gideon Sam said Durban's bid, was proof of the country's commitment to international sport.

"These are exciting times for South African sport," he said. "Over the years we have shown our ability to stage the biggest sporting events, with (1995) Rugby and (2003) Cricket World Cups being an example, plus of course the 2010 Fifa (football) World Cup.

"We've done exhaustive background work and are now of the opinion the country is ready for a major multi-code sports event and we are proud to announce our intention to bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"It's a huge step forward in our history – and that of the African continent," he added.

The original Commonwealth Games, then known as the Empire Games, were staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930 while Edmonton hosted the 1978 edition – the first time the event was formally known solely as the Commonwealth Games.

Were Edmonton to be chosen for 2022, it would be the fifth time Canada had hosted the Games after Hamilton (1930), Vancouver (1954), Edmonton (1978) and Victoria (1994).

"Canada is the birthplace of the Commonwealth Games, with the British Empire Games held in Hamilton in 1930. We welcome the opportunity to bring the Commonwealth's best summer athletes back to Canada in 2022," said Dr Andrew Pipe, president of Commonwealth Games Canada.
