UCL: Chelsea, Real Madrid join other quarter finalists

Real Madrid defeated Germany's Schalke04 9-2.
Chelsea FC and Real Madrid have officially joined the list of quarter finalists for this year's UEFA Champions League following the favourable results recorded in Wednesday's home game in London and Madrid respectively

In the highly anticipated game at the Stamford Bridge, Chelsea secured a 2-0 win over Galatasaray to scale through on a 3-1 aggregate score line.

Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, the home side made a quick start, taking the lead just four minutes after kickoff as Oscar played the ball in for Samuel Eto'o to fire low under Fernando Muslera in the Galatasaray goal.

Didier Drogba tried to find the equaliser against his former club for the visitors, and appealed for a penalty when he thought that Cesar Azpilicueta had handled the ball, but the referee disagreed.

Jose Mourinho's men doubled their advantage just before half time when John Terry tried to force the ball in from a corner, before Gary Cahill slotted it home with the rebound.

The remaining minutes of action failed to produce any more goals but for Chelsea it was already done and dusted as they emerged the only English side to so far make it to the last eight.

In the other game involving Real Madrid and Chinedu Obasi's Schalke O4, it was the Spanish team that again carried the day despite fielding a fairly weakened side.

Madrid in a convincing fashion cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 3-1 win over Schalke 04 at the Bernabeu , giving them a 9-2 victory on aggregate.

Xabi Alonso set up the opening chance of the night by delivering a free kick to the head of Alvaro Morata, but the striker could only put his finish over the crossbar.

However, Real were able to break the deadlock just a couple of minutes later when Gareth Bale picked out Cristiano Ronaldo with a low cross, giving the Portuguese an easy finish.

However, the visitors got back on level terms just after the half-hour mark, when a long-range Tim Hoogland strike deflected off Sergio Ramos and into the bottom corner.

Carlo Ancelotti's men extended their lead  a minute later as Morata tapped in after Ronaldo had rattled the crossbar looking for his hat-trick.

Julian Draxler came close to adding a late consolation for the visitors, but was denied by an Iker Casillas save.

Ronaldo continued to push for his hat-trick in the final minutes of the clash, hitting the post with a low effort five minutes from full time, but he could not find a third before the end of the match but would now continue his chase for more goals in the quarter finals.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG and Atletico Madrid are the earlier teams to secure their berth in the last eight.
