Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi scored thrice on Sunday night to help Barcelona to a vital 4-3 win over fierce rivals Real Madrid in an explosive El-Classico duel at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The latest feat by Messi makes him the highest goal scorer ever in El-Classico matches having taking his goals tally to 21
Dubbed as a potential title decider, the two teams gave a good account of themselves and it was Barca that took the lead after just seven minutes when Lionel Messi slid the ball through to Andres Iniesta, who took a touch inside the box before smashing an effort past Diego Lopez and into the top corner.
Madrid got for themselves the equaliser they desperately sought when Karim Benzema rose above his markers in the area to plant a header past Victor Valdes.
The comeback was completed just four minutes later as Di Maria again found Benzema, who proceeded to fire an effort into the top corner.
Barcelona however, levelled things up once more as Messi made his way into the area before drilling a low effort into the bottom corner.
Like the first half, the second 45 minutes was equally eventful as it witnessed 'contestable' penalty decisions and the sending off of Pepe after getting a second yellow card.
Madrid were the first to score in the second half as Ronaldo scored from the spot.
However his opposite number Messi was despatched two spot kicks calmly which effectively saw Barcelona carrying the day in the seven-goal thriller.
While the win for Barcelona narrows the gap between them and Madrid, Atletico were the greatest benefactors from the result as they will enjoy top spot at least for this weekend.
