Governor Fayemi mourns ex-Ohanaeze leader, Ralph Uwechue

Mr. Fayemi says the late Mr. Uwechue brought his vast experience, connections and knowledge to bear in restoring peace to some African countries afflicted by civil strife.

The Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has mourned the passage of the former President-General of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, Ralph Uwechue.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, said the death of Mr. Uwechue has robbed Nigeria of one of its committed patriots, peacemakers and distinguished statesmen.

Governor Fayemi described the late Mr. Uwechue as an outstanding pan-Africanist, who was an embodiment of selfless service.

He described the late ambassador as one of the pacesetters of the Nigerian diplomatic circles who helped cement the nation's foothold in the international community.

Mr. Fayemi said the late Mr. Uwechue brought his vast experience, connections and knowledge to bear in restoring peace to some African countries afflicted by civil strife.

Governor Fayemi, who worked with the late diplomat in the pro-democracy movement in exile, stressed that the late Mr. Uwechue was passionate about the unity of Nigeria, a passion he continued to demonstrate during his tenure as President-General of the Ohaneze Ndigbo.

The governor said the contribution of the late statesman was needed at a time the nation is about to discuss some fundamental issues on its existence through the National Conference which commences this week.

He urged the younger generation to emulate the virtues of sacrifice, selflessness, service and peaceful coexistence which the deceased represented in his lifetime.

The Governor prayed God to grant the family, associates and admirers of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss.

"The government and people of Ekiti State commiserate with pan-Ndigbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and members of the family of the late patriot and pray that God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss", the statement added.
