PDP regrets deaths at Immigration recruitment, calls for urgent probe

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday regretted the deaths of job seekers during stampedes in some states of the country and called for an immediate investigation into matter.

The ruling party made the call in a statement made available to newsmen through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.
 
The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, had conducted a recruitment examination simultaneously throughout the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory FCT.
 
But the recruitment exercise turned bloody in some parts of the country including Abuja and Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In its statement, the PDP called on the Ministry of Interior and relevant government agencies, to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the stampedes.

It also urged government agencies and parastatals, as well as PDP elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to redouble their efforts in curbing unemployment in the country.

This, the party noted, was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan's Transformation Agenda and the party manifesto.

The statement noted, "The PDP was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the untimely death of the young citizens who were at the exercise.

"The victims were not at the venue only to secure jobs but also to be allowed the opportunity to contribute toward the development of the nation.

"It was unfortunate and disheartening that the victims paid the supreme price while trying to be more useful to the nation."

The party, therefore, commiserated with the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the wounded.
