Lecturers in Nigeria’s Colleges of Education to continue strike

COEASU has been on strike since December 18, 2013

Lecturers in Nigeria's Colleges of Education, COEASU, are set to continue with their ongoing nationwide strike as an Expanded National Executive Council, ENEC, meeting held ended in deadlock.

The ENEC meeting was called on March 15 at the Niger State Collage of Education, Minna, PREIUM TIMES learnt

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, the chairman of COEASU at the College of Education, Zuba, Abuja, Ahmed Bazza, told PREMIUM TIMES that the lecturers resolved to continue with the strike.

"The union has resolved to continue the strike action due to the failure of government to address the issues in contention as earlier stated," Mr. Ahmed said.

The lecturers' demands include proper funding of the colleges and adequate welfare for lecturers.

The lecturers commenced their strike on December 18, 2013 after several failed meetings with government representatives.

Nigeria's Colleges of Education are supposed to, among others, train teachers who would be able to teach in Nigeria's primary, secondary, and post secondary schools.
